Every year, McGill’s residences bring together some 3,000 undergraduate students from all over the globe to break bread, share common space, and bond over late-night study sessions. You’ll get the chance to connect with people you might never otherwise meet, from all disciplines and backgrounds, and form the kinds of friendships that will last a lifetime.

We know your first year can be a little daunting, and that’s why McGill residences are designed to help ease your transition into university life. No matter which residence you choose, a dedicated team of staff and upper-year students—from Floor Fellows, to Hall Directors, to Residence Life Facilitators—will be on hand to offer support. Whether you’re looking for answers, advice, or just a friendly ear, residence staff are there to help.
Can’t make it home for winter break? Faculty and staff members’ families are happy to host you for a home-cooked holiday meal.
Eating on campus
From homemade pizza to freshly rolled sushi, pan-seared salmon to piping hot stir fry; we offer it all on campus. With 30 food service locations, including five residence dining halls and a whole host of retail outlets, there’s something to satisfy your every craving.
The variety extends to our meal plan options as well. No matter where you live, you’ll have the freedom to choose between several different plan levels or types, so you can choose the plan that best suits your appetite, schedule and budget. Menus are created with health and quality in mind, and we’re more than happy to work with specific dietary needs.
You can feel good about eating on campus—at McGill, we’re just as passionate about our planet as we are about great taste. The farm on Macdonald campus is our residence halls’ biggest supplier of fresh produce, and we locally source as many ingredients as possible.
McGill is also the first Canadian university to be recognized by the Marine Stewardship Council for our use of sustainable seafood, and were the first Fair Trade Campus in Quebec. It’s all part of our bigger commitment to sustainability in all that we do.
If you’d prefer to live off-campus while you study, Montreal is a great place to do it. Rent is surprisingly low, especially when compared with other major university cities. What’s more, commuting to class will never be a slog. In addition to an extensive bus and metro system, the city boasts an impressive network of bike paths and a popular bike rental program.
